The most important men in my life have all smoked cigars. I still remember my grandfather rolling his own; that’s how he would begin a daily ritual that ended every night with the last puff as he sat in his rocking chair resting after a long day of work in the fields, a ritual that was inevitably repeated the following morning.
My father jealously guards his daily private time with his cigar. During those moments, I sense the emergence of entire chapters of books yet to be written, or maybe dreams or preoccupations, which are shared with the total lack of inhibition provided by one’s most faithful confidant.
So when my husband lights his cigar, there are many loves in that unmistakable aroma. Cuba’s relationship with its tobacco production—the best in the world—is also a relationship of love. Cuba’s tobacco growers are bearers and cultivators of art and tradition that make up an essential part of our Cuban identity.
To Habanos and to love OnCuba has dedicated this special edition.
It can’t be a coincidence that the Habanos S.A. corporation chooses February, the month of love, to hold its Habanos Festival every year. You can learn more about this important event in this month’s edition, through our exclusive interview with Jorge Luis Fernández, the company’s commercial vice president.
Throughout the entire magazine, you can discover all the bits and pieces that make Habanos the best cigars in the world, real works of art.
We also bring you a special article on the history of the Romeo y Julieta brand’s cigar box labels, comments by a champion Habanosommelier, an interesting article about different Habano flavors and the ritual of smoking these cigars.
In this issue, you can also find the wonderful story of John Lennon’s Cuban girlfriend–a special present for lovers–by one of Cuba’s most popular authors, along with Havana’s Modernist architecture, the history of the Cuervo y Sobrinos brand, the amazing work of visual artist Carlos Guzmán, and a summary of the economic changes implemented on the island during 2012.
We invite you to enjoy OnCuba as though it were one big Habano: sharpening all your senses and letting yourself go with the unbridled pleasure provoked by the greatest of our loves.
