The Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) issued a note this Saturday to clarify the epidemiological situation of the Matanzas municipality of Jagüey Grande, one of the eight territories in that province that are experiencing a re-outbreak of COVID-19 and where “there is no transmission of unknown viruses or fulminant pneumonia” as had been circulating on social networks.
“All the clinical, epidemiological and laboratory studies that have been carried out on the cases related to the outbreak controls and the institutional event, corroborate the diagnosis of COVID-19 and have not identified other viruses that can cause Acute Respiratory Infections,” the note said.

In this regard, Dr. Amancio Martínez Morejón, deputy director of the Matanzas Provincial Hygiene and Epidemiology Center, stressed that “what is circulating is COVID 19 and we have studied it.” He also added that the situation “is located mainly in the municipalities of Matanzas, Cárdenas, Jovellanos, Perico, Colón, Pedro Betancourt, Unión de Reyes and Jaguey Grande,” TV Yumurí reported.
According to the MINSAP, so far in 2021, and according to the cut taken into account to date, 231 COVID-19 positive cases had been diagnosed there; 119 of them detected in March and seven on April 1, which shows an increase in transmission as of March 20 for an incidence rate of 201.8 per 100,000 inhabitants.
There are currently 29 active controls and one COVID-19 event, distributed in three health areas.
“A control was carried out in La Estancia Beverage and Refreshment Factory, which is located in the Combinado Victoria de Girón, where on March 28 a transmission event was opened, in which 40 cases of COVID-19 (14 workers and 26 people from the community) were confirmed, and it has spread to the neighboring municipalities (Ciénaga de Zapata, Jovellanos, Pedro Betancourt and Perico) given the workers who come from these territories,” the note explained.
Already at the press conference on Saturday morning, Dr. Francisco Durán had said that the focus control that grouped the most cases was that of La Estancia.

The MINSAP underlined in its note that measures had been adopted by the Provincial and Municipal Defense Councils, by the Provincial Department of Health and the rest of the organisms of the territory. The health system in the province maintains a work team accompanying all actions to control the transmission in the municipality.
This Sunday, Matanzas reported 114 cases, of the 1,162 identified throughout the island. “The number is high,” Durán said again.
