Jazz Plaza 2018
As is usual, the 33rd Havana Jazz Plaza International Festival is here with the presence of national and international renowned musicians. The event kicks off this January 16 until the 21st and is sponsored by Chucho Valdés and the Cuban Music Institute. The Festival spaces extend throughout Havana.
The Inaugural Concert will be in charge of Bobby Carcassés, who will have as guests David Amram (U.S.), Yosvany Terry, the Santa Cecilia wind quintet, the Santa Amalia dancers and the Afrojazz Ballet, in the Avellaneda Theater, on Tuesday January 16 from 9 p.m. Afterwards, on Wednesday the 17th, at the same time and the same place, maestro Chucho Valdés will give his concert.

The Cuban singer will perform in the Mella Theater as part of the International Festival next Thursday 18th at 9 p.m.
<h3Haydée Milanés and her trio in Mexico
For the first time together with her trio made up by Jorge Reyes (double bass), Raúl Verdecia (guitar) and Enrique Pla (drums), Haydée Milanés se will perform next Thursday 18th at 9 p.m. in the Mexican National Auditorium’s Lunario. Milanés will share the stage with several deluxe guests, and if you booktickets starting now you can take away with you her latest CD, Amor.
Ray Lema in Cuba
An exclusive performance by Ray Lema, one of the most creative artists in Africa and the world, together with the ISA Jazz Philharmonic under the baton of Brazilian maestro João Maurico Galindo, the permanent director of the Symphony Orchestra of the State of Sao Paulo. This will be next Thursday 18th at 3 p.m. at the ISA (Calle 120 No. 904, between 9na and 23, Cubanacán, Playa).

Je suis ARES
The Victor Hugo House is inviting you to the Je suis Charlie personal expo by caricaturist and visual artist Arístides Esteban Hernández Guerrero (ARES), which will be inaugurated today at 6 p.m. The exhibit of caricatures is a tribute to the left-wing French satire weekly Charlie Hebdo, which suffered a terrorist attack on January 7, 2015.
Cervantes in the Grand Theater
The Spanish Cultural Action and the Spanish Embassy in Cuba are presenting in the Alicia Alonso Grand Theater of Havana the exhibition 16 personajes que maravillan y…Miguel de Cervantes from January 14 until next April 30, 2018. The exhibition pays tribute to one of the greatest writers of Spanish literature on the 4th centennial of his death in 2016. This didactic exhibition visualizes Cervantes’ literary creation through his characters and introduces us to the writer’s world of fiction.
Between canvases and sculptures
An exhibit in Havana brings together the works of four of the fundamental exponents of Cuban contemporary art, Alfredo Sosabravo, Manuel Mendive, Pedro Pablo Oliva and Roberto Fabelo. The exhibition, installed in the José Martí Memorial in Revolution Square, consists of 16 sculptures and 12 canvases belonging to the private collection of Luciano Méndez, a Spanish businessman living in Cuba. Entre lienzos y esculturas, which can be seen until next January 23, is the fourth exhibition in which Méndez takes out his collection to bring the public close to visual arts.
The city submerged in photos
Urbe sumergida is the name of the personal exhibition by photographer Alexis Rodríguez, dedicated to the 19th anniversary of Habana Radio station, of the Office of the City of Havana Historian, which will be inaugurated today at 11:30 a.m. in the Casa de Mexico (Calle Obrapía #116 corner of Mercaderes, Old Havana). Minutes before the inauguration, Habana Radio will give a press conference about the activities with which the 19th anniversary of the foundation of the Voice of Cuban Heritage will be feted.
Hommage
Collective expo in homage to the 200th anniversary of the foundation of the San Alejandro Academy. The inauguration is for next Wednesday 17 at 5:30 p.m. in the Picabia Gallery of Havana’s Alliance Française, Palacio de Prado (Prado and Trocadero).
We are or we aren’t
The Collage Habana Gallery of the Cuban Fund for Cultural Goods (San Rafael, between Consulado and Industria, Centro Habana) will inaugurate next January 18 at 5 p.m. the photographic exhibit Somos, by visual artist Roberto Chile. The expo will be dedicated to the memory of Enriqueta de La Hata, and will remain open to the public until February 18.
The 7th Contemporary Cuban Art Salon is back
El Público in Nueva York
El Público Theater Company, under the direction of Carlos Díaz, is presenting Antigonón, un contingente épico in New York. Since last January 10 and until Sunday 14th, this work will be staged at The Public Theater (425 Lafayette St, New York 10003). Cuban premiere in movie theaters
The Cuban film La hoja de la Caleta, by directors Mirta González Perera and Jorge Campanería, is already being screened in movie theaters. The Yara Movie Theater is presenting the film in two continuous showings starting 5 p.m.; the Charles Chaplin Movie Theater will do so until Sunday, always at 6 p.m., as well as the Glauber Rocha Hall of the New Latin American Film Foundation; the 31 and 2 Hall, of Plaza municipality (Friday 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 6 p.m.); and the Infanta Multicinema Hall 2 (6 p.m.).
