Caminar descalzo sobre los finos tapices del artista cubano Carlos Garaicoa es revivir La Habana de los comercios. Increíble. Son como los mismísimos pisos de mármol o granito de la capital. Algunas de la firmas de las antiguas compañías, plasmadas en los suelos de los grandes portales de las zonas de Centro Habana o del Vedado, construyen parte del universo simbólico de la muestra Fin del silencio. Hasta el 11 de junio estará abierta al público esta exposición en el Centro de Arte Contemporáneo Wilfredo Lam como parte del programa de la Bienal.

Son siete las obras de la instalación que el espectador puede desandar. Tejidas en Bélgica, representan suelos citadinos de la capital insular con grietas y manchas del tiempo. El autor (radicado en La Habana y España) intervino los rótulos de algunos al cambiarlos por expresiones poéticas o metáforas; otros los captó con una videocámara un día cualquiera.

A escala real pueden leerse en los lienzos nombres evocadores como La Lucha, Pensamiento, Sin rival, Reina… solo que acompañados de otras palabras que los redimensionan. Los portales habaneros concebidos por Garaicoa tienen impreso, por ejemplo, La lucha es de todos y Reina destruye o redime.
La Habana es una ciudad reescrita en Fin del silencio. Palabra e imagen conversan al sacar los espacios y la arquitectura de su contexto original. Las piezas de quien ha expuesto en una veintena de galerías del mundo, son textos en el sentido poético y social: incitan a la mirada crítica del sujeto.

La expo evidencia el diálogo con el espacio urbano que ha sostenido Garaicoa durante su carrera, desde que egresó de la Universidad de las Artes, ISA, en 1994. Según ha expresado el artista, los suelos de los portales en otras épocas “eran espacios pensados para la publicidad. He querido transferir ese espacio público, mediante un proceso de apropiación poética, al ámbito de lo privado”.
